The Class 52 diesel hydraulic locomotive was introduced by the BR Western Region in 1962 to provide high speed passenger and freight services. To achieve this the locomotive was fitted with two Maybach engines coupled with a Voith 3 speed hydraulic transmission. This had the added advantage that the locomotive could still run if one engine failed. Problems with the transmission however, meant that the locomotive experienced very high maintenance and operating costs and could only achieve the acclaimed 90MPH top speed in certain circumstances. In the end these disadvantages meant that the class was replaced by 1977 with the more efficient and faster Class 50’s and Class 143 HST’s. The classic elegant design with sweeping curves and unmistakable presence has always meant that this locomotive has been a firm favorite with Diesel aficionados. Dapol have managed to capture this character through detailed laser scans and in-depth collaborative research with fellow modelers and the model features:
- Detailed body with etched fann grills and separately fitted hand rails
- Finely detailed and cast wheels
- Metal sprung buffers
- 5 pole Super Creep Motor for controlled pulling power and fine slow speed running
- Directional light with internal cab light
- DCC ready with provision for a PluX 21 pin decoder
- Accessory bag with optional fitted components
- Separately supplied etched brass name and number plates
- Alternate bogies supplied for negotiating tighter radius curves

Ordered incorrect livery but Dapol dealt with the return and refund very efficiently. Great service.
An absolutely stunning locomotive, Very well detailed with a paint job to compliment this. Performance and sound very realistic. Only thing I feel could have improved the diesel if the name and numbers had been fitted
£200 in July sale. dcc sound maroon. Sounds great. Very heavy for 00. Some lovely detail.
The product was good value but overseas delivery costs were greedy, being the same as during COVID and 4 times charged by RAILS for similar item sent by Royal Mail. DAPOL should be ashamed.
