Dapol have a long standing tradition of manufacturing self assembly kits in the UK. Some of our Kitmaster tooling dates back to the late 1950’s and is a real testament to how good the tool makers in this country were back then.
As part of Dapol’s commitment to continue manufacturing as many products in the UK as possible we are launching a new series of laser cut card kits. This represents a major investment in new equipment to be used here in Chirk where the kits are designed and manufactured in house. The new range of models will be marketed under the brand name Kitmaster Genesis to pay homage to the old whilst embracing an exciting new future.
The kits will be laser cut from the finest self-coloured card and will include all the necessary injection moulded or 3D printed accessory parts (including glazing) to complete the model. Where appropriate the models will be supplied with printed interior decoration. All you need is glue.
The kits are based on real world prototypes but are easily customizable lending themselves to “kit bashing” should the modeler wish to have something truly bespoke on their layout. Each kit will have a set of detailed assembly instructions available online.
The latest range of buildings we are producing are those found on the Glyn Valley Tramway and are to be modelled in 4mm scale compatible with 009 and HO/OO gauge layouts .

Both kits arrived quickly as did the printed instructions requested {printer faulty} I stress Read the instructions especially regarding laminating the sides.any error lining up at the ends will result in poor corner joints which if done correctly are imperceptable needing a little colouring.I advise finding a glue wich dries matt. The chimneys are also problematical-build separately not forgetting to leave a brick depth at the top for the chimney pot.No holes are provided in F1,2,3 to locate gutter assembly I7,H13.
Now the engine shed, builds easily, again chimney care neded. I put it on worktop with a Beyer Peacock model. It only just cleared the doorway,on track it was too high. With ground level at sleeper height marginal.Luckily I had not fitted brick plinths D4 etc These were glued to 125 thou plastic strip the to the bottom of the walls with the brick overlapping 3 courses. The shed will now take available engines for GVT,FR,Corris but not VoR or L&B I have no others to test.
Pictures show the window frames to be black so I should have painted these before glazing but how about C2 being cut in black? I have not yet slated the roof but Ivam not happy with thc capping strip and will look for alternative.
In conclusion, good well designed kits,go together easily with care and clean so kitchen table not workshop!
This review is based on the unmade kit as I haven't got around to building it yet.
Firstly, my kit was received within a few days of ordering, which was great.
The kit is made from laser cut pre-coloured card. It looks really well produced, the embossed brick detail is very effective. The roof slates are precut in strips which need to be applied individually to give a more realistic effect. The sides and ends are a red/brown colour which gives a very realistic brickwork effect. The slates are dark grey, windows are in a creamy/off white colour and other details are in black. So no painting is required. In comparing the kit with the drawings of the actual building, it looks pretty accurate. Instructions are not supplied in the kit, a QR code is enclosed with the parts, linking to the instructions on the website. The instructions are very comprehensive and clearly laid out in pictorial form.
It looks like a great kit, I am looking forward to making a start on it.
This kit is amazing, great detail, fit together well, easy to assemble. Looks just like the GVT Engine Shed Museum in Glynceiriog! Very happy with this kit!
I have bought both Glyn Ceiriog engine shed and station and I am impressed with quality of the brick print and the slate roof . The posable doors and windows are a big plus. However there are two points that I
found challenging, firstly the chimneys are very difficult to assemble, and I am having to resort to scratch building them , I think a 3D printed option would have been better. The other challenging part of the construction is mating up of the brickwork corners, which I will resolve with filler and touch up with a brick shade of paint. One more point ,and this is personal preference, the ridge tiles are far to orange , and my reference photo's indicate that they are a blue black colour. Fortunately I have found 3D printed versions. Overall 8/10, but thank you for supporting the GVT, because up till now a 3D model of Chirk station has been the only GVT building available .
