Oil tankers perfect for that fuel depot fuelling tanks look, good level of detail
I assembled eight of these tank wagons in the 1960s from the original Airfix kit, so I knew what to expect. The kit hasn't changed much since then except that it now comes with better wheels and couplings, and is in gray plastic. The Airfix edition used to be in black plastic, and, since the finished tanker is supposed to be black, it would have been better to have used the same colour plastic. The original cost 1/6 in the old currency, which would be 7.5p in decimal ! But they're still good value for money, and I shall be assembling a 20 wagon train of them to represent the Fawley-Bromford Bridge oil trains that I used to see as a kid at my local station.
I am at present doing 6 of these tank wagons so the first is all trial and error. Some parts are unecessary but form part of the mouldings as good wheels and couplings are added to the kit. The chassis hasseveral extra perforations but no explanaition of why. There are two vacuum tanks that are not shown in the right place on the exploded diagram. On the REGENT version in the colour finished model, the maker has put one under the chassis. The plates that carry the logo are unecessary and I have filled the holes in thr tank body with a chop job on the old Airfix coupling pin with a bit of gentle filing. I am awaiting brass top hat bearings for the better metal wheels supplied. Overall a great little wagon that I am very pleased to make up and add to my rolling stock.
An excellent model. Very easy to assemble and paint. I shall order another (my third).
Nice model of a tank car. After cementing the tank make sure you remove all small remaining plastic parts. The manual is at some points rather vague.Does come with uncommon couplers.
OO Gauge Class B Tanker Esso Kit will require assembly, painting and supplied transfers applying.
