The Grampus wagon was the principal open wagon for the engineering departments of BR from the early 1950’s to the early 1980’s. The wagon deign itself was extremely versatile with drop down sides and removable end planks. It was used for moving everything from engineering supplies to ballast and sleepers and even signal posts, which could be carried on overlapping wagons by removing the end planks,. Nearly 4800 wagons were built between 1951 and 1961 across several designs variations and were used by all regions of BR. They were finally decommissioned to make way for sturdier all steel open wagons which could withstand better the heavy usage of the more modern civil engineering machinery.

Small, but excellent wagon for a small mixed rake! Packaging is the usual high standard carton with card sleve around a plastic case and foam insert, keeping it pristine. Detailing is superb and the removable load adds flexibility. Even the wagon interior (if load is removed) is there in nicely defined planking! I converted thecwagon to use the Dapol magnetic couplers and it was a fast and seamless switch. My only complaint would be that the wagon is so small and light, it does need a little extra weight added to help with coupling and to prevent the wagon itself being drawn by the magnet strip. Easily fixed with some lead weight. Great purchase in general and definitely recommend!
