Pannier Tanks were used almost exclusively in Britain by the GWR. They were brought into service to replace earlier built and designed saddle tank locomotives. Their design offered the locomotive a low centre of gravity, reasonable range and easier access to the working of the locomotive. In all 863 were built between 1929 and 1950 and sixteen survive into preservation. Eleven 5700 saddle tanks were bought by London Transport for use on shunting duties on the London Underground Network. These were numbered L89 to L99 and continued in service until 1971. The locomotives durability and functionality is attested by the fact that the last locomotive in service was used well into the 1970’s by the National Coal Board at the Deep Duffryn Colliery at Mountain Ash.

My last layout was 35 years ago when my little grafar tank engine bustled its way happily around my dc layout.
New layout, dcc, very excited to see this little loco. It looks lovely.
On the track, it's sloppy. So much so I struggled to know if it was actually on the rails. The wheel back-to-back feels like 7mm, there's so much free play. Is this to allow it to negotiate really tight curves?
The instructions say you must oil, or warranty invalidated. My oil came out with a gush, so I don't think I can return the model. I also found it trying to drive over one of the small cab pipework detail wires, so I guess I must have knocked that off too.
The instructions say you should run on dc first. I don't have a dc supply! Well, I turned on my dcc and ..... starts, then stalls. Won't start, then jerks away. If run on a continuous loop, maybe it'd run itself in, but that's it for me. Such disappointment!
So, I've junked my N gauge layout plans - pity as I was going to re-use my coaches and trucks from the past. I'll go OO gauge and wont buy a loco until I've seen it running smoothly in the shop.
I'll put this loco on a shelf. An expensive static display. And a lesson learned.
Wonderful detail and just what I needed
